Walter Hewel records this remark; see Erich Kordt, 'Nicht aus den Akten', which generally gives more space to the proceedings. Also Paul Schmidt, 'Hitler's Interpreter'. A. I. Berndt, the deputy Reich press chief, remarked in this connection:
'People in the street raise their arms to the troops as a greeting, but they are serious and silent. What goes on in their minds?' (Der Marsch ins Grossdeutsche Reich).
